Story

Marshalsea was a prison in Southwark. It functioned primarily as a debtors’ prison. Marshalsea occupied two sites on what is now Borough High Street, the first between 1373–1811 and the second between 1811–1842. The remains of the southern wall of the second Marshalsea prison can be seen next to Angel Place, London SE1.

Marshalsea was one of several London prisons, some of which had a specific role to house those convicted of debt. Millbank Penitentiary and Newgate Prison are also to be found in Londown Under.
